Holy Joseph Smith!

So, I was raised in a pretty non-traditional home. I was taught Mormon beliefs and ideals from early childhood. However, these beliefs and ideals were rarely practiced in my home. It seemed like our family's involvement in the church was more about making friendships with the young missionaries than truly embracing the foundation of the church. I've always had my own doubts and struggles with the religion, the most profound was the extreme inequality that the church teaches. The thing that bothered me the most was that women cannot hold the priesthood. So, from my experience, I've found that the church is fairly intolerant of anyone that is not a straight, white male. I'm so pleased to see that Mormons are looking a little harder into what their own beliefs are, instead of following the leader as I have seen too many times. Follow your heart, not your "prophet".

Here's what sparked this blog:

Well well well.....looks like youve turned your back on god little lady...its ok, God only created women to spare men the pain of making babies...haha jk. But seriously on the topic i completely agree with you. Coming from a similar background i find that there was a strong patriarchal influence in the mormon church, a factor that they couldnt quite let go of coming into the 21st century. Despite the iconic "good" religious teaching such as "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" and such it seemed the message of treating your female counterparts as equals never got through to many in the ultra-secular world, other religions included. This archaic tradition amongst the oldest of our religions is a sad site to see as there may be some good to be derived from these old teachings, but something Ive found time and time again in religion, the more specific you become in your teaching the more you distance yourself from others and creating big difference in yourself from other people lead to statements such as "what we do is righteous and what they do is evil..." Such has been the cause of countless conflicts and deaths throughout the worlds history.
